Hello, I'm John & Karen

John:
Started sailing during university (1970s) with small boats cats and skiffs. Moved to inshore and offshore yacht racing as well as owned 22ft yacht. Did first Sydney Hobart race 1986, all New South Wales and Queensland offshore races, Sydney- Noumea, Sydney- Lord Howe etc as crew and part owner. Have done 4 Sydney Hobart races, including the 1998 and campaigned "Loki" for a season in the Mediterranean. Have owned 8 yachts over the years, we still own 3 ! (2 x 23 footers and our Swan 46). As skipper / co skipper with my wife Karen we bought our Swan 46 in the US - Maine 12 years ago ( third owner) and have upgraded constantly ever since to meet our growing family and horizons. Travels in her include 2 seasons in US between Newport Rhode Island ( Swan Nth American Cup) and the Canadian border and refitting / wintering in Camden Maine; Nth Atlantic to Azores; English South Coast; Holland ;Germany; all around the Mediterranean; Canary Is ; ARC to the Caribbean; 2 seasons all over the Caribbean Islands; Pacific; New Zealand ( 2 seasons); Australia . Nearly all of the above was with the family ( wife and two children ,now teenagers). Last year the family sailed from Sydney to the Great Barrier Reef.
I have an Australian Boat licence, a radio operators licence and completed sea survival courses, diesel mechanics TAFF course, offshore crew qualifications, navigation TAFF course , radar course, weather course and St Johns Ambulance Medical certificate.
We have constantly raced in large and small fleets. We cruise our own Swan on Sydney Harbour and surrounding coast and our smaller yachts her and on Lake Macquarie an hour and a half north of Sydney. Our children sail small boats and all the family have licences.
I am a competent amateur mechanic ( boat and car), reasonable on electrics and struggle with electronics ( though we have none on the small yachts and the Swan's are new and I understand them.

Karen:
Started to sail aged 10 with her parents on the Elbe River and Baltic, North Germany. Learned how to sail in an Optimist. Started racing and cruising dinghies independently aged 16, has cruised and raced in Germany, Scandinavia, UK (Cowes), Med, Australia. Participated in ARC 2012 as co-skipper of family boat Swan 46.
